Two people, including an Oak Forest police officer, suffered minor injuries Monday morning in a townhouse fire near the intersection of Woodland Drive and Laramie Avenue in Oak Forest.

Oak Forest police officer David Kachlik attempted to rescue a female resident from a second-floor unit, where the blaze apparently began, officials said. The officer was overcome with smoke and seemed to be suffering from shortness of breath, Oak Forest Fire Chief Terrence Lipinski said. He was transported to Palos Community Hospital, Lipinski said.

The resident, who was conscious but suffering from minor injuries, was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Lipinski said.

While the cause of the fire still was under investigation, Lipinski said fire officials believe it began in a couch in the injured resident’s unit.
