(NORTHBROOK) An Illinois State Trooper was killed Thursday night when a semi-truck struck his police cruiser on the Tri-State Tollway in north suburban Northbrook, a state police spokeswoman said.
The crash occurred about 11 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-294 near Willow Road, Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.
The on-duty trooper was in a state police squad car when he was struck by the semi-truck, according to a release from state police.
Trooper James Sauter, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.
Sauter has been with the state police since June 29, 2008, state police said. He just completed a temporary assignment in Air Operations and was recently re-assigned to ISP District 15 as a patrolman. Sauter is survived by his wife, Elizabeth and family.
“Trooper Sauter left a legacy of courage, honor and duty,” ISP Director Hiram Grau. “Our hearts are heavy with grief, but they are also strengthened by Trooper Sauter’s brave calling and dedicated service.”
The two left lanes of the southbound tollway remained closed early Friday as of 5:20 a.m., Bond said.
