The championship matches of the SouthWest Suburban Blue Tournament had a distinct dual-meet flavor.
Of the 15 podium toppers at the two-day event hosted by Joliet Central, nine of them came from Sandburg and five from Lockport.
Sandburg needed every champion it could get. The Eagles used a late push to edge Lockport 74-72 to grab the team title.
Sandburg was led by the No. 1 doubles championship tandem of Nicole Davids and Kathleen Ensalaco. The pair went undefeated in the tournament, with Davids also conquering the No. 5 singles bracket and Ensalaco the No. 8 division.
“It feels so good to have won because we put in a lot of extra time and effort throughout the season,” Ensalaco said.
“We’ve been working together since the summer,” Davids said. “We placed second at fourth doubles last year but there’s a lot more pressure as the No. 1 team.”
Lockport’s Sara Napoli, however, had the most impressive run in the tournament.
Napoli, a returning state qualifier, downed Homewood-Flossmoor’s Cory Galen in three sets for the No. 1 singles crown. She also added the No. 3 doubles title with Kelly Miotti, a second-place finisher at No. 2 singles.
“Winning conference has always been one of my goals, especially since last year,” said Napoli, who finished third at No. 1 last season. “With all the local teams in our conference, it’s nice to know that all this hard work has made you one of the best in the area.”
Taking the No. 2 singles championship was Sandburg’s Ashley Godawski, who finished third at ninth singles as a sophomore.
“Last year I focused more on the championship game instead of what was right in front of me,” Godawski said. “So I bettered myself in the offseason so I could be where I’m at now.”
Other singles champions were Lockport’s Carlie Cisarik (No. 3) and Lauren Hueckstaed (No. 10), H-F’s Leslie Bonthron (No. 4) and Sandburg’s Jenna Ciaccio (No. 6) and Nora Bush (No. 9).
Lockport’s Sydney Baltrusaitis and Jane Kolacki won the No. 2 doubles title.
