Firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that started in an attached garage Wednesday morning at a home in the 12300 block of Mohawk Road in Palos Park.
No one was home at the time, but a passer-by alerted the fire department after seeing smoke coming from the residence, Palos Fire Protection District Fire Chief Steve Carr said.
Firefighters found light to medium smoke coming from the eaves and vent and had to force their way into the L-shaped ranch home. The fire quickly spread to the attic and was contained to the garage and attic, Carr said.
The living area had smoke and water damage and is temporarily uninhabitable.
“A good percentage of their personal belongings were salvaged,” Carr said. “The temperature was not a friend to firefighters today, but it’s better than freezing.”
