A Tinley Park woman was hospitalized after suffering burns and smoke inhalation after a fire broke out overnight at a home in the 8100 block of Piute Trail, Tinley Park Fire Chief Ken Dunn said Monday.
The woman initially was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox but later was transferred to Loyola University Medical Center, Dunn said. He did not know the extent of her injuries.
Firefighters found the woman, who was home alone, in the living room, trying to get out, and rescued her about 4:30 a.m. A firefighter who fell through the first floor, via a hole created by the fire, was not injured, Dunn said.
The fire, which started in the basement of the two-story home, caused extensive damage, and the cause remains under investigation, Dunn said.
A neighbor called the fire department, but the home had a working smoke alarm, he said.
Firefighters contained the fire within 20 minutes but remained on the scene until 10 a.m.
