Morgan Park senior Xzavier Taylor played his best basketball of the season in the game that mattered most, the Class 3A state championship. Taylor literally as playing for everything: a title and a college scholarship.
Taylor came off the bench to score 11 points and grab 12 rebounds in helping the Mustangs to a 63-48 win over Cahokia in the title game.
The second part of the 6-foot-9 big man’s dream became a reality over the weekend as he gave a verbal commitment to Bradley.
“Being close to home was a big factor,” Taylor said. “Also knowing (Bradley assistant coach Ron Coleman) so well.”
Coleman, hired at Bradley in September, quickly has made a significant impact. The former Young assistant and Mac Irvin Fire club coach also brought Illinois transfer Mike Shaw to Peoria.
“When I visited I really liked the atmosphere at Bradley,” Taylor said. “I liked the way (Bradley coach Geno Ford) coached his team, his attitude about everything.”
Taylor said he had two goals for senior year, winning a state title for his coach Nick Irvin and getting a college scholarship.
“I’m just real happy at how everything went,” Taylor said. “I know (Mac Irvin) is smiling down at me. He always told me I could do it. I’m happy I was able to show him that I did.”
