A car was struck by a Metra train in the South Side Morgan Park neighborhood Friday afternoon, leaving one person seriously injured and halting Rock Island District trains during the rush hour commute.

Inbound Rock Island District train No. 424, which was scheduled to arrive at La Salle Street Station at 6:25 p.m., struck a vehicle in the 1800 block of West 119th Street shortly after 6 p.m., a Metra spokesperson said.

A person who was pinned in the car was extracted and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious to critical condition, according to Chicago Fire Media.

Train No. 424 remained stopped at the scene of the crash about 6:30 p.m., and other trains were unable to get by in either direction, the Metra spokesperson said.
