Norfolk State tight end Joseph Hawkins was named to the 2013 All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason First Team.

Hawkins, who prepped at Eisenhower, finished with 27 receptions for 322 yards and one TD last season as the Spartans went 4-7 overall and 2-6 in the MEAC. Hawkins, a redshirt senior, was third on Norfolk State’s roster in both receptions and receiving yardage in 2012.

In his first three seasons at Norfolk State, Hawkins totaled 53 catches for 665 yards. The 6-foot-3, 250-pounder has four TDs in his career.

Susan the Spartan

University of Dubuque softball player Susan Danielewski was named to the All-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Second Team for the 2013 season.

The senior outfielder was third on the Spartans in batting average (.344) while starting all 34 games.

Danielewski, who attended T.F. South, was fourth in runs (15), second in hits (33), tied for first in doubles (7), second in home runs (2) and second in RBI (19).

The Lansing resident helped the Spartans go 16-18 overall and 7-7 in the IIAC.

Wood is good

St. Laurence graduate Kyle Wood was one of four Purdue baseball players named to the Big Ten’s All-Freshman Team for the 2013 season. The Boilermakers led the league in players chosen.

The Orland Park resident was picked as a designated hitter. Wood batted .247 for the season, starting 44 of the 46 games in which he appeared. Wood scored 32 runs, to go along with eight doubles, one triple, five home runs and 24 RBI. He posted a .409 slugging percentage and a .381 on-base percentage. Wood led Purdue in homers.

Wood made eight appearances (7 starts) as a pitcher for the Boilermakers, who were 17-34 overall and 6-18 in the Big Ten. He batted in the lineup in all seven games in which he was the starting pitcher, becoming the first Boiler to do so since 2003.

Wood was 0-2 with a 5.00 ERA. In 27 innings, he struck out 17 and walked 17.

Meanwhile, at Millikin

Two Southland residents were named letter-winners for the 2013 season as members of Millikin’s softball team.

Freshman outfielder Alyssa Visvardis (Lockport) was named the Big Blue’s Offensive Player of the Year.

Visvardis led Millkin in homers (6), total bases (71) and doubles (13), while tying for the team lead in RBI (28). She batted .323 and was second in runs (24) and hits (40). Visvardis appeared in all 35 games (all starts) during the 2013 season for Millikin, which was 20-15 overall and 5-9 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Also earning her first letter was freshman outfielder Brie Cimino (Homewood-Flossmoor). The Homewood resident appeared in 10 games off the bench for the Big Blue, batting .200 and driving in one run.
