Playing without Ohio State-bound OL Jamarco Jones (still rehabbing from offseason shoulder surgery), De La Salle still had just enough offense from quarterback Shelby Spence and running back Mikale Wilbon to edge Bronzeville rival Phillips at Soldier Field. Meteors coach Dan O’Keefe said Jones is expected to miss two to four games.
After Phillips quarterback Dewayne Collins threw a 45-yard TD pass to Trumain Moorer with 2:10 left to cut the deficit to 51-48, De La Salle recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock.
Wilbon ran 24 times for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Spence was 23-of-35 passing for 265 yards and a score, and also ran for 37 yards and three TDs. Phillips quarterback Dewayne Collins passed for 239 yards and two scores and ran for two TDs.
BY THE NUMBERS
After a quiet first quarter that ended with De La Salle up 10-7, the teams combined for eight touchdowns in the next 13 minutes. Phillips scored the last two in the first minute of the third quarter, cutting a 38-21 deficit to 38-35.
“We’ve still got some work to do. As you can see, we had some turnovers and a lot of penalties. We’re going right back to the (drawing) board, back to work.” — Wilbon.
