In a battle of teams that lost Week 1 games by a combined score of 88-16, Reavis took advantage of three Joliet Central fumbles to help take a 45-0 halftime lead Saturday afternoon in Joliet. Last year the Rams beat the Steelmen 7-6 in Burbank.
Sophomore defensive lineman Vincent Vertucci scooped up a fumble and rumbled 44 yards for a Reavis touchdown to make it 14-0 with 7:59 left in the first quarter. He said it was his first TD since he played with the Bubank Titans in fifth or sixth grade.
Rams quarterback Jose Romero threw for 148 yards and two TDs and ran for a score.
Joliet Central is 0-29 since Joliet Township split into Joliet Central and West in 2010. Austin Adams ran 32 yards for a touchdown with 30 seconds left for the Steelmen’s first score since Sept. 29, 2012 against Sandburg.
“After you lose a game like that (last week’s 44-16 setback to St. Laurence) everybody thinks you can’t play football and nobody knows how to coach. But we stuck together and had confidence. We bounced back and knocked out an athletic team on their field.”
