Four-time defending Class 5A state champion Montini (10-0) overcame four turnovers to win its 21st straight playoff game. Quarterback Alex Wills was picked off three times in the first half, one of which was returned 55 yards for a touchdown by Deonte Thomas, but he recovered to complete 23 of 33 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns as the Broncos scored the first 29 points.
After Wills opened the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter, the ensuing kickoff bounced off the leg of a Morgan Park player and was recovered by Montini. That set up Nicholas Italia’s four-yard TD run that gave the Broncos a 15-0 lead.
Senior linebacker Tyler Quick enjoyed the first two-interception game of his career. Quick’s first pick came in the second quarter and led to a 15-yard touchdown run by Italia that made it 29-0. The Broncos forced five turnovers in all.
BY THE NUMBERS
Italia rushed 15 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns, while Wills threw two TD passes to Leon Thornton and one to Connor Costello. Morgan Park (5-5) was held to 90 yards of total offense.
“It’s really unusual for Alex to perform like that because we rarely turn the ball over, but we took it into our hands. The defense needed to step up against a good offense and that’s what we did.” – Quick
