Although most of us still have Halloween candy in the house and the turkey is a week away from being carved, Christmas is fast approaching.

And what is the universal symbol of Christmas? The Christmas tree. Christmas tree farms are plentiful in northern Illinois, carrying popular varieties like the white, Scotch and Austrian pine or Douglas, balsam and Canaan firs and even Norway, white or Colorado blue spruce. And their crop is ready to be chopped down and hauled home by holiday revelers.

Most of these area tree farms have handsaws you can use (some may require a deposit) and offer free shaking and baling as well as precut trees. Many farms offer a free ride to the fields in a horse-drawn (or tractor-pulled) wagon. Many offer amenities like hot coffee or hot chocolate, popcorn, farm animals for children to admire and warming stoves or bonfires. A few farms will even let you bring your leashed dog with you. Some locations sell seasonal decorations such as handmade wreaths and garland. And Santa Claus takes up residence on certain weekends at a few. Phone ahead or check websites for specifics.

With all that in mind, here’s a list of area tree farms. Pack up the family, pull on the mittens and get ready to find your perfect tree. Just make sure to call first or check the farm’s website to ensure the variety you want is in stock and also to check the rules of the farm. It’s a good idea to bring your own handsaw (many do not allow chain saws) and rope, just in case. Most farms are cash or check only.
