St. Francis wide receiver Troy Torrence was named the Mid-States Football Association’s Mideast League Offensive Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 11.
Torrence, who prepped at De La Salle, turned in a record-setting performance in the Saints’ 21-19 win Nov. 9 over visiting St. Ambrose.
The junior pulled in eight passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Torrence scored on a 3-yard pass in the first quarter and a 43-yard scoring strike in the third.
Torrence finished the regular season fourth in the NAIA in receiving yards (1,141) and sixth in receptions (71). His 1,141 receiving yards are Saints single-season record and his 71 catches are the second-best in a season by a Saints receiver.
Torrence, who totaled 12 touchdowns in 2013, had four 100-yard performances on the season, including a school-record 243 receiving yards against St. Xavier, which was the third-best in the NAIA this season.
Torrence also was chosen the MSFA’s Mideast League Offensive Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 30 after catching 12 passes for 243 yards and two scores in a 37-25 loss to visiting St. Xavier.
On the ‘Mark’
Benedictine’s Ante Markotic (Mount Carmel) was named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Men’s Soccer Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sept. 29.
The junior forward scored both goals in a 2-1 double-overtime victory Sept. 28 over Edgewood and had three shots in a 1-0 decision Sept. 25 over Dominican, the first win by any NACC team over Dominican to halt a 104-match unbeaten streak in conference play.
Markotic appeared in 19 matches for the Eagles this season, making 13 starts. He led Benedictine in goals (8) and points (18), while finishing with two assists.
Markotic, who helped the Eagles finish 9-9-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the NACC, also shared the team lead in game-winning goals with three.
Kudos for Cortney
Eastern Illinois’ Cortney Jerzy, a Lockport graduate, was chosen the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 8.
The sophomore goalkeeper helped the Panthers record back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2011. The Homer Glen resident had a 0.00 goals-against average for the week.
Jerzy made nine saves in a 1-0 win over visiting Morehead State and had one save in a 1-0 victory over visiting Eastern Kentucky.
Jerzy finished the season by appearing in and starting 14 matches in goal. She was 6-8 with three shutouts and a 1.78 GAA. Jerzy made 98 saves and allowed 24 goals as Eastern Illinois finished 6-14 overall and 6-4 in the OVC.
Olivet Nazarene freshman setter Katie Tabisz (Lockport) was named Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s Volleyball Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 22.
Tabisz was named to the all-Olivet Nazarene Tournament team after averaging 5.73 assists and 1.2 kills to go along with a .240 attack percentage in four matches.
Tabisz’s best all-around match in the tournament came against Georgetown College (Ky.) when she totaled nine kills, 22 assists, 10 digs, three service aces and one assist block. The Tigers went 2-2 in the tournament.
On the season, Tabisz led Olivet Nazarene in assists (799) and service aces (42). She was second in digs (323) and sixth in kills (164) as the Tigers finished the season 21-20 overall and 14-5 in the CCAC.
