Starting Thursday and continuing through New Year's Day, there will not be any lane closures along the stretch of LaGrange Road that is under construction in suburbs including Orland Park (pictured), in order to ease the flow of holiday shopping traffic. There will continue to be lane shifts during that period, however. | Mike Nolan~Sun-Times Media

There’s good news for holiday shoppers hitting stores in the construction zone along LaGrange Road.

Through New Year’s Day, one thing drivers won’t have to contend with is traffic-snarling lane closures, although lane shifts will continue to pop up.

Work began this summer on a $95 million project to widen LaGrange to three lanes in each direction from 131st Street in Palos Park to 179th Street in Tinley Park. The Illinois Department of Transportation, which is overseeing the project, expects the widening to be finished sometime during the summer of 2015.

Jae Miller, spokeswoman for IDOT, said communities affected by the construction asked that the contract be written specifically to avoid lane closures during the busy holiday shopping season. Orland Square Mall, Orland Park Place and several other retail clusters are located on LaGrange, which traditionally sees heavier traffic loads as the holidays approach.

With adjacent Ravinia Avenue seeing increased traffic as drivers use it as an alternative to LaGrange, Orland Park officials had temporary traffic signals installed at the intersection of Ravinia and 153rd Street. The village is considering the possibility of eventually installing permanent stoplights there.

A few blocks south, work was recently completed on 156th Street, just north of the village’s public works department, which connects LaGrange with Ravinia.
