If it’s the outdoor festival atmosphere you crave, check out Christkindlmarket in Chicago and then head to these events:

‘ILLUMINATION’

The 1,700-acre Morton Arborteum in Lisle, Ill., is presenting “Illumination: Tree Lights at the Morton Arboretum” through Jan. 4. No mere twinkling lights show here; instead, trees respond to visitors’ touch and sound creating a colorful illuminated landscape. A milelong paved walking trail around Meadow Lake and through Conifer Walk, combined with cutting-edge technology, make for a magical nighttime experience (event runs 4:30-8:30 p.m. daily; closed Dec. 16 and 24-25). The “Personalities” experience allows visitors to create their own light show. And, of course, don’t forget to “Hug a Tree.” Concession-refreshment stands are available. Visit mortonarb.org/illumination for complete information and admission prices.

HOLIDAY MAGIC

Brookfield Zoo is presenting 1 million twinkling lights at 2013’s Holiday Magic extravaganza, 4-9 p.m. Dec. 14-15, 21-22 and 26-31. Caroling to the animals, ice carving, a laser light show and live entertainment are also part of the fun. Visit czs.org/magic for admission prices and more information.

ZOOLIGHTS

Lincoln Park Zoo is hosting its annual ZooLights celebration from 5-9 p.m. Dec. 13-23 and Dec. 26-Jan. 5. Illuminated 3-D displays, photos with Santa Claus, ice carving, live entertainment, thousands of twinkling lights and family activities throughout the zoo. Visit lpzoo.org.
