Hillcrest (5-4, 3-1) trailed 5-4 but stepped up the press and the help defense and soared to an easy South Suburban crossover win over visiting Shepard (3-5, 2-2). Taylor Adway finished with 19 points to lead the Hawks, while George McDaniel added 12 off the bench and Almari Daniels finished with 10. Darren Cohen led Shepard with 18 points.
A 12-0 first-quarter run helped the Hawks build a 21-11 first-quarter lead and 51-24 advantage at the half. Eight Hillcrest players had at least three points by the break.
To go with his 19 points, Adway added 12 rebounds and three blocks in three quarters of play. Adway, a 6-foot-8 junior, is getting a lot of Division I interest, with offers from Toledo and Chicago State already on the table.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Hawks pressure defense forced 13 first-half turnovers, while Hillcrest shot close to 60 percent in the first half.
“We are really starting to stress with them to play fundamental defense and play with energy. We haven’t been doing that earlier in the season.”
— Hillcrest coach Don Houston
