THE SKINNY

Playing for the first time since finishing sixth at Pontiac over Christmas, host Bloom (9-5, 3-0) used a big second quarter to pull away for good Friday in the Southland contest.

TURNING POINT

Rich South came out in a 1-3-1 zone to start the second quarter, but Bloom faltered only briefly. The Blazing Trojans stayed patient and rattled off a 10-0 run, including baskets from James Coleman and Jared Johnson to go up 27-12. Bloom led 31-17 at the half.

THE STARS

Coleman and Johnson. The senior forwards powered the way to the win, Coleman finishing with 18 points and seven rebounds, Johnson adding 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

BY THE NUMBERS

Rich South (8-6, 2-1), which suffered its fourth straight loss, committed 18 turnovers while shooting just 2-of-15 from three-point range. The Stars shot 13-of-46 from the field overall. Bryce Lydon’s 12 points led South. Mickheill Harris contributed 12 points for Bloom.

QUOTABLE

“We hadn’t played in awhile and came out a little rusty, but we got going. We knew the zone was coming so we just had to recognize what was going on (defensively). Coach (Ron) Ashlaw prepared us to the fullest because he knew how good South was trapping.” – Coleman
