Bloom coaches had a very simple emphasis during practice during the past week: look inside first, shoot from the outside second.

The visiting Blazing Trojans were able to execute that game plan to perfection Friday night against Crete-Monee Friday and controlled most of their 70-61 Southland Conference win.

The Trojans (10-6, 4-0) gained control of first place of the conference, a game up on the host Warriors (11-6, 3-1).

“We had great ball reversal and shared the ball well,” Bloom coach Ron Ashlaw said. “The staff put in some good stuff, and we got some great looks (Friday).”

Jared Johnson led the way for the Trojans with 23 points, followed by 16 points from Dalvin Echols, including nine of those points in the third quarter. James Coleman added 12 points.

Brandon Johnson, normally a starter, had 21 points off the bench for the Warriors. Tyler Williams added 16 and Juan Gardner finished with 10. According to coach Tom Cappel, Johnson arrived late and lost his starting spot.

The Trojans took the lead for good 4-3 and built that lead to 32-17 midway through the second quarter before the Warriors closed to within 37-32 at halftime. They got no closer than 43-39 early in the third.

“We couldn’t seem to do anything,” Cappel said.

Late in the fourth quarter the Warriors got to within 66-59. The Trojans, however, made their last five free throws to seal the win.

“We were getting good ball reversals and pounding the ball inside,” Johnson said. “We were looking for the big man James and he got some points (Friday).

“This feels pretty good being in first place in conference. We have Rich Central next and we should be able to get that win, too.”
