Everybody’s complaining about Bruce Rauner. Let’s look at the Democrats for instance. They gave us the second-highest property taxes in the country and how does their kingpin Mike Madigan make his living on the side? He helps rich people get their property taxes reduced. Tell me there isn’t a conflict of interest there. No. 2, the Democrats actually had the gall to redraw voting districts so a Republican virtually has no chance of getting elected because of the way they redrew them. And when they tried to stop it, they took it to the courts that were appointed by the … ]]> Mon, 22 Sep 2014 02:07:48 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Sept. 21, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

An unidentified commenter mentions that he said two years before that Derrick Rose is worthless and has done nothing but collect a fat paycheck — and the season hasn’t even begun. Injuries are part of the game in sports; it might be worthwhile to bite your tongue till the season begins and see how “worthless” D. Rose is. Just maybe the Bulls organization has better insight than you do. Victor from Orland Park It’s absolutely great to see that we are sending troops to Liberia — where? — to fight the battle against the Ebola virus, and we are sending … ]]> Sun, 21 Sep 2014 02:11:56 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Sept. 19, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

I said over two years ago the Bulls should have let Derrick Rose go. He’s totally finished. He’s not doing one thing. And this is going to be three years that he’s got a fat salary. Time to let him go. Get somebody new. To make millions I would start by controlling labor costs. To control labor costs I would eliminate the minimum wage. In this economy the poor (us) would not be able to afford union dues. Now I could manipulate labor to infighting and further reduce labor costs. If you would only elect me to governor. In regards … ]]> Fri, 19 Sep 2014 02:11:40 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Sept. 18, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

Explain to me why Democrats were in love with and found the wealth of the Roosevelts and Kennedys a nonissue but are outraged regarding the wealth of Romney and Rauner. The latter two earned their fortunes, not inherited them, and have provided thousands of jobs through revitalized companies. In today’s Congress, the Democrats outstrip the Republicans in personal wealth. Desperate candidates will use class war to sucker the ignorant voter. JS from Oak Lawn I had to laugh at a political commercial I saw on TV: 100 years of failure, and Pat Quinn wants four more. Guess what? Thank you, C from Tinley Park: Being an active CPD, I’ve discovered “pulling over to the ‘right’ for sirens and lights” is a lesson of the past. I’ve had my sirens and emergency blue lights activated, headlights flashing, spotlights in car mirrors, and the motorists, while I’m in the far left lane, stop in front of me. They have pulled to the left on the median. In some cases, they thought they were responding to the same call — they just stayed in front of us. Motorists, pull to the far right safely. We are here to protect your life … ]]> Wed, 17 Sep 2014 02:12:15 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Sept. 16, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

To the people of Burbank: If you really care about the flooding and power outage situation, I strongly urge you to take the time to vote. Don’t forget about the damage that has been done over and over again and what has not been done about it and whose watch it was on. We can’t afford (literally) to let this go on. After all, why are we paying taxes? If Illinois starts to tax pension income, the pensions of retired government workers will not be the only ones are taxed. Anyone receiving a “qualified” pension will also have to pay … ]]> Tue, 16 Sep 2014 02:09:30 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Sept. 15, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

The Cubs are raising ticket prices next year. Amazing how people are willing to support a perennial loser. But a lot of visitors want to see Wrigley Field. Tourists have always been fascinated by ancient ruins. Ron in Orland Park To the writer who commented on “Check, Please!” not covering more of the Southland: I am not sure if you were stating a fact or being sarcastic. Yes, we are definitely the forgotten people. Sharon B. from Tinley Park Illinois is broke. It ranks last or near last in all financial measures. President Obama still won’t do anything to secure our border. I don’t think he cares. Washington’s press releases tell of all the children entering. What they don’t tell us is that more than 85 percent of the males are between the ages of 13 and 21 and many are wearing gang colors and sporting gang tattoos and have no identification. And they tell us Hamas and ISIS are not here? How would they know? Let’s hope the thousands that Mayor Rahm and Sen. Durbin welcome to Chicago don’t cause any problems. Tom from Evergreen Park said students are sure to have “slanted liberal ‘clap trap’ ” beaten into their heads just by going to college. Why are we so afraid of people whose worldview differs from ours? That thought scares me more than college students being exposed to new ideas and learning to think. Chicago To the person who warned me about sending my children away to college: Thanks for the warning. I definitely did warn my children about close-minded people who follow the herd instead of thinking for themselves. Mike Ditka thinks Bruce Rauner would make a great governor. Tom from Mokena wrote that some guy named Rauner gave millions of dollars to charity. Besides Rauner, his wife and his tax attorney, the guy from Mokena is the only other person alive who has seen governor-wannabe’s tax returns. Bruce will not let the voters of Illinois see them. Now you would think that a guy who gives millions to charity would want that shown before an election. I remember some guy named Mitt who had the same problem. To Joe in Tinley who thinks it’s a bad thing Rauner is in a $140,000 wine club: Bruce Rauner is rich, and this is how rich people spend their money. You choose to live in Tinley Park and pay more in taxes as opposed to living in Robbins, and I don’t care how you choose to spend your money. Mike in Bridgeview I’m really happy for the Jackie Robinson Little League team. It’s nice that something good is going around in Chicago for a change, but enough is enough already. I am of the opinion that former Bears coach Mike Ditka will do or say anything for some money. Rick from Evergreen Park I had a lot of enthusiasm for the arrival of Marc Trestman as the Bears new head coach. Since he arrived (in 2013), I’ve seen improvement in some aspects of the team. However, it has become obvious that he isn’t the demanding type. He seems to be overly concerned with the psyche of the team members. I guess these guys are products of the enabler generation, where to criticize poor performance was considered tantamount to permanently destroying … ]]> Tue, 09 Sep 2014 02:10:09 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Sept. 8, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

Regarding how people send nudes (photos) through electrical devices thinking that no one else will see it: Well, I say that everyone can see it. There is at least one person other than the person you send it to that can see all the things you ever post or send. Sending things you wouldn’t want anyone else to see through electronic devices isn’t safe. Just stop sending people nudes and respect yourself. Before you put Thursday’s Southtown into the recycling bin, tear out Phil Kadner’s story about governor-wannabe Bruce Rauner’s $140,000 initiation fee to a wine club and Rich Miller’s equally brilliant piece on Rauner’s ludicrous campaign commercials. $500,000 spent this week alone to sell us his snake oil with totally made-up math. His wife, in her commercial, says he will be the “education governor.” How do you do that when you cut personal income tax rates by 40 percent and freeze real estate taxes forever? I hope Quinn brings these articles to the debate. Thanks, Phil and Rich, for shining the … ]]> Sun, 07 Sep 2014 02:12:47 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Sept. 5, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

To all those complaining about a Little League player being called a hero: The word hero has been both misused and overused for years. It is used to describe both sports teams and players (professional and amateur), regular acts of kindness and also people doing what their jobs or life situation require of them. The word no longer is used solely to distinguish someone who has clearly gone above and beyond what a job or situation requires. Words degrade all the time. Language is not static.
