Our servicemen have given their lives and limbs to preserve our elections — it’s the candidates who are the problem. By the way, campaign ads are charged at the lowest equal rate by law. Thank you, Gordon Beckham, for your time with the White Sox. Second base won’t be the same. Good luck with the L.A. Angels. Illinois passed a law that allows us to keep our driver’s licenses in the event of a traffic stop for a minor infraction. We now join all the rest of the states who already have this in force. It is so important today … ]]> Fri, 22 Aug 2014 22:28:03 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Aug. 22, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

I’ve got an idea: Why don’t we stop spending, and then we won’t have a deficit to cover by going into debt? Homer Glen To the Burbank commenter griping about the ice bucket challenge: Do you realize this has brought out adults and kids to come together for the ALS foundation plus make loads of money for research for the disease? Something positive in this world is a nice change. Keep the challenge going. Linda from Monee To the writer from Burbank about the “stunt,” the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS, aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease: As of Monday, the ALS … ]]> Fri, 22 Aug 2014 02:27:42 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Aug. 21, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

It’s so nice to see families and friends (from all over Chicago) come together to support the Jackie Robinson West team. That’s what a community should be doing. Pat from Alsip Someone on the news said that the boys of the Jackie Robinson Little League team are heroes. How are they heroes? A bunch of kids hit balls with a stick — what’s heroic about that? Congratulations to the Jackie Robinson Little League baseball team. The Southland is proud of you guys. I would like to know why the SouthtownStar has not mentioned anything on the sports pages about the … ]]> Thu, 21 Aug 2014 02:12:42 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Aug. 20, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

When did the policeman cease to be a friend and help the citizen? It seems like his job is to find something wrong and criminalize you as soon as possible. When my car was vandalized, the Mokena police acted like I was taking them away from serious crimes like doing 35 in a 25 zone or having one taillight. Thank goodness I’m an 80-year-old white woman, so I’m not likely to be profiled yet. According to CBS News (hardly a conservative outfit), President Obama has played 177 rounds of golf so far with a once-a-week habit while George W. played … ]]> Wed, 20 Aug 2014 02:11:42 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Aug. 19, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

Wow, 29 shootings, five killings in Chicago this weekend. Will Holder send the FBI to investigate? Mary from Lansing The police already scan everyone’s license plate for warrants or to see if a car is stolen. Why can’t the computer also tell them when someone has no insurance? The insurance companies could send them a list of the plates of drivers who bought insurance from them, and this could be easily be added to the same database. We all pay more for the scofflaws who don’t buy insurance. It would save everyone money because more people would buy insurance, making … ]]> Tue, 19 Aug 2014 02:10:32 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Aug. 18, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

Who’s telling the truth? The cop or Dorin Johnson, who was walking with the victim and was an eyewitness to the entire tragedy. Even though not admissible in court, a polygraph test given by an impartial expert to give an indication who’s telling a true version or is embellishing the situation. Bob from Oak Forest The Tinley Park Village Board has committed the funds for resurfacing Oak Park Avenue from 183rd Street to the train station. They have recently submitted a proposal to continue with this project, completing it in the near future to 159th Street. Ted of Frankfort Square: You may be happy to look at unsightly medians, but your state tax dollars are being wasted elsewhere, instead of being used as they were intended, if the Illinois Department of Transportation is not maintaining the medians or reimbursing your local government to do it. Either way, it’s no surprise that we lose. Tinley Park It’s that time again, time for all these people to start bashing what teachers do and how they do it. If they all know so much about teachers and teaching, why didn’t they become teachers? They couldn’t handle it. My questions … ]]> Sun, 17 Aug 2014 02:12:54 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Aug. 15, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

Regarding President Obama on the golf course: For the record, this president has taken only 129 days of vacation. At this point in his presidency, George W. Bush had taken 407. Mel from Orland Park Hit the road, Jack: Owner of the L.A. Clippers Donald Sterling is gone. B. J. from Hazel Crest I saw an SUV pull into a parking lot in Mokena, and in the back window there was this sign that stated, “Mokena teachers working for a fair contract.” I think this sign would be more appropriate: “Stick ’em up.” What happened to baseball? What is it that makes Fox News the enemy? Have you ever watched it? They have both left and right people on. Where do you get your information from? The Sunday pulpit? The Internet? Bill Maher? Colbert? Jon Stewart? Please don’t say MSNBC. Research the news for yourself. Don’t take other people’s opinions as news. Don’t just look at one side, look at all takes. And if all you do is to look at the regular channels, then you are missing a whole lot of what is really going on out there. We don’t need term limits. What we need … ]]> Thu, 14 Aug 2014 02:12:52 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Aug. 13, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

Tinley Park loves to make real estate deals with lots of tax breaks. Of course, most of those deals are with big retailers in big shopping centers. It’s no wonder that small business can’t make it in that town. U.S. 30 is a federal road. If the village of Frankfort has agreed to spend citizens’ tax dollars to maintain U.S. 30 medians, so be it. Frankfort Township wisely did not agree to spend tax dollars to maintain U.S. 30 medians. The Illinois Department of Transportation is responsible for the overgrown medians. Thank you, Frankfort Township officials, for minding my tax … ]]> Wed, 13 Aug 2014 02:12:09 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Aug. 12, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

To the person who is so concerned about all the “children” at the border and said, “Could you look these kids in the face and force them back into poverty and violence?” Well, how many of these children are you taking in? How many do you want your neighbors to pay for? Do you have the same empathy for all those teenage to 20-something kids with all the tattoos and gang members that are also coming in? Bud Billiken’s parade organizer, Beverly Reed-Scott, bemoaned the fact the media focused on the shootings of two people just standing and watching the … ]]> Tue, 12 Aug 2014 02:11:02 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Aug. 11, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

Prepare for a heatwave. As students begin their new school year, expect the hottest temperatures of the season to settle upon us. The dog days of summer will arrive in the fall. Tinley Park It’s disappointing, though not surprising, that a number of commenters have had little sympathy for the children fleeing gang violence in Central America, many without their parents. Could you look these kids in the face and force them back into poverty and violence, the likes of which you probably have not known? I don’t think I could. I’d like to know what kind of toxic political Kool-Aid columnist Phil Kadner is drinking regarding the Bult Field-Peotone airport development? Is he really trying to kid some gullible types with kudos to convicted Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. and his so-called vision of the Peotone-south suburban airfield? Jackson’s vision was money (how to line his pockets), power (naturally a Jackson family favorite), votes (once you’re in office you want to stay there) and patronage control. My personal kudos go to self-made successful businessman Mr. Bult. This guy deserves the credit, not the phony-baloney congressman. I have been trying to get a pothole fixed by Cook County for 38 days now. The hole is about 20 feet long and 3 feet wide on the edge of the road on a main street in Justice. After 38 days and six phone calls, I am getting the same story: “We are not sure that it is our responsibility. Maybe it belongs to the tollway,” which runs near the street. Maybe if it was Orland or Oak Brook, the simple two- to three-hour fix would be done by now. If you or I took 38 days and did … ]]> Fri, 08 Aug 2014 02:11:00 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Aug. 7, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

Great headlines: “Oil prices fall for 6th straight day,” “North Dakota surpasses 1 million barrels of oil per day.” Then why did my local Mobil station raise its prices 20 cents per gallon? Greed. Someone writes to give “specifics” on why they do not like Obama. Of course, they are all nonsense. The deficit has decreased every year under Obama. In addition, he had to bail this country out of a financial mess. So, it make sense that he had to add to the debt to fix the Bush mess. It was George Bush who started the program you refer … ]]> Thu, 07 Aug 2014 02:12:42 -0500
