I thought we were living in the 21st century. But when you hear a statement like equal pay for women is just a political distraction? When women are being paid less for doing the same job as a man? V.J. from Hazel Crest The taxpayer who thinks people move from Chicago to the suburbs to escape rising property taxes must never have looked at property taxes on suburban homes, condos or townhouses. I have. If I bought a home of any sort in the ’burbs that is equal in price to mine in the city, my property taxes would be … ]]> Sun, 20 Apr 2014 15:59:49 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for April 20, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

When I worked we could only be promoted two grade levels at a time. Reading about the Cook County Circuit Clerk employees receiving pay increases from $12,000 to $18,000 more per year raised my blood pressure. Spending taxpayers’ money like it’s water. Who’s watching the henhouse? The hens themselves? V.J. from Hazel Crest They’re saying they are going to pass this pension bill on property taxes. But here’s another thing: They must think people are stupid. They aren’t going to put the tax reform in until 2016 because they are going to be up for re-election in 2015. Do they … ]]> Sun, 20 Apr 2014 02:17:09 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for April 18, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

The Affordable Care Act, besides insuring a lot of uninsured people, has also made coverage cheaper for the people that had coverage. The prescription drug problem is going down, George W. Bush’s doughnut hole is closing and your cost is going down everywhere. So it will be good, I think, if the Koch brothers keep lying about it. Maybe the Republican voters will realize they are being taken down the garden path. Anonymous Grandma hasn’t fallen off the cliff, yet the Republicans state the first thing they are going to do when they take over the Senate is repeal the … ]]> Fri, 18 Apr 2014 02:17:54 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for April 17, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

This is not intended to be a slam to people who are seriously in need of employment, but as I was reading online local job opportunity postings, I could not help but chuckle to myself and think, “How many creative names are there for what used to simply be called clerk or receptionist?” It used to be that you had to have a big job for a fancy title. Now you can have one of those with minimum wage. Tinley Park This isn’t a new topic, a very old one to say the least. Lenin, who is known as the father of socialism said, “Communism is the road to socialism.” Marx, who is the father of communism said, “Democracy is the road to communism.” Machiavelli would say there is no difference between the three, that is why the founding fathers gave us a republic, “if we could keep it,” as Franklin warned. Recently, numerous healthy trees in Garfield Ridge have been removed. Come November, those politicians presently in office will not get my vote. What we need are politicians that care about our natural environment. It’s almost Easter and temperatures have been well above freezing. It is time to take down the Christmas lights and decorations. Tinley Park Last year, Homer Glen underwent months of discussions with homeowners and Homer’s officials about whether to ban leaf burning as our other surrounding communities have or to continue to burn leaves. The decision was to issue permits to burn leaves under some restrictions. One of the restrictions was a 50-feet rule, which states leaf burning must be at least 50 feet from property lines or any structures. One big problem is permits are issued without a site … ]]> Tue, 15 Apr 2014 02:13:12 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for April 14, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

Between Obamacare and a minimum-wage increase, it seems there will be fewer entry-level positions. Retail as well as fast-food is going to automated checkouts. I shop elsewhere because of Walmart’s self-checkouts. My husband has a pension. To keep his union solvent, we took a $350 decrease per month. I would like to know why the teachers think they are above anybody else and they can’t take a cut like the rest of us? The city of Chicago might have a shot if all of these teachers would let a cut in their pension go. We had to do it, and … ]]> Mon, 14 Apr 2014 18:17:38 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for April 11, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

Kudos to Trustee Theresa Flynn on having Sheriff Tom Dart to oversee the goings on in Crestwood. Both of these individuals are dedicated, honest people who are a real assett to Crestwood. Judy from Crestwood Can someone give me the logic of assigning someone to 26th and California for jury duty when there is a courthouse much closer to a person’s home in Bridgeview. I know the usual comment that 26th and California has a greater need for jurors. So select more jurors from areas closer to 26th and California. Select jurors that are closer to Bridgeview. Simple, isn’t it? … ]]> Fri, 11 Apr 2014 02:14:57 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for April 10, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

Socialists are everywhere, in Washington, in colleges, in the media, even in your closet and hiding under your bed. Good thing the only true American patriots, also known as old white male right-wingers, are on the alert. They’ll tell you that guns and the military are the only solution to our problems, Jesus is a Republican and there’s a widespread conspiracy to deprive old white guys like them of their rightful place as masters of the universe. Just don’t ask them to pay taxes to support anything they don’t agree with or you’ll mark yourself as yet another evil socialist. … ]]> Thu, 10 Apr 2014 02:09:36 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for April 9, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

I’ve got one word — a movie title — for the person who thinks Disney movies were all smiles years ago: “Bambi.” I still cry when I see this movie. Chicago To Worth: The reason the mainstream media does not cover the investigations of the IRS scandal is quite simple. Most of today’s journalists have been brainwashed by socialist-bent college professors. As a result, they refuse to print anything that casts a negative light or anything that is embarrassing to the Obama administration’s socialist policies. I see very sad stories in the media concerning returning soldiers. They return home with … ]]> Wed, 09 Apr 2014 02:16:34 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for April 8, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

The woman from Midlothian says the horse and carriage should be banned because New York can eliminate them, too. Well, if New York jumped in the lake, should we follow them? You’re from Midlothian; you probably don’t spend money in the city. Regarding cellphone use, you don’t have to be in a parking lot to use the phone. You can simply pull over and park but not on the shoulder. If you pull onto a side street and put the vehicle in park, then you’re OK. I would like to reach out to a guardian angel by the name of Eric who helped save my son’s life while he was pinned underneath his car in the Jewel parking lot. Thank you Eric so very, very much, and I hope you see this. Thank you. When is our country going to realize that mental illness is a very serious issue? We give aid to the poor, sick and elderly, but when it comes to the most damaging mental illness, the government lets them roam the streets and hurt other people. Soldiers with PTSD especially. All the money being spent on engineering, planning committees and such to handle the Asian carp problem — why not peel off some of those funds for fishermen whose job it would be to capture those carp and then put those carp to good use? What about cat-food companies? What about zoos and aquariums that use fish to feed their fish-eating attractions? I’m sure that there are plenty of people who need wages for work and pets and animals that would not know the difference in the type of fish that is processed for their meals. Donna Vickroy’s “Across Generations” was one of the most delightful, heartwarming and uplifting stories I have read in the Southtown, as were the accompanying pictures. I want to commend Lisa O’Leary for her wonderful idea of bringing her little kindergartners to the Smith Village retirement community for a Lenten service learning project, as well as CEO Kevin McGee for wisely seeing this as a very special experience for the residents. What a wonderful lesson to teach the little ones, and I’m sure everyone involved benefited greatly. Oak Forest Pat Quinn is at it again with election-year giveaways. Now he wants … ]]> Thu, 03 Apr 2014 02:17:28 -0500
