Everyone wants to know what will become of the land from the Tinley Park Mental Health Center. Only Mike Madigan and Ed Zabrocki know for sure. It will certainly wind up in the hands of the friends of Pat Quinn, Mike Madigan or John Cullerton, with appropriate finder’s fees for Mike and Ed. Tinley Park I would like to see the land on which the Tinley mental hospital stands turned into a partly commercial or light manufacturing complex but a large majority set aside for nature and parks. It would be a perfect place for soccer tournaments and baseball fields. … ]]> Fri, 24 Oct 2014 21:27:02 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Oct. 24, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

Kudos to Brian Urlacher, who said Jay Cutler is an elite quarterback in pay only. Rick from Evergreen Park It is hard to believe that someone is blaming the Democrats for the historically high wealth gap that exists today between the top 1 percent and everyone else. This wealth gap has been in the making since the 1980s when Reagan implemented his “voodoo economics” better known as “trickle-down.” The idea that tax cuts for the wealthy will eventually trickle down to everyone else is ridiculous. Not to mention our corrupt political system that allows money to influence our laws. The … ]]> Fri, 24 Oct 2014 03:38:36 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Oct. 23, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

Have you noticed when President Obama’s leadership rating fell to a new low? You don’t see Michelle and their children by his side voting like before. Scotty and Tony from Oak Lawn I see that someone thinks we should be celebrating Obamacare because it does not appear to be as bad as almost everyone said it will be. The reason is because almost none of it has been implemented yet. Obama and the Dems keep pushing more and more of it out until after the 2014 elections. I wonder what they are afraid of? Your paper reported that the state … ]]> Thu, 23 Oct 2014 04:45:21 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Oct. 22, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

I’d like to thank President Obama for endorsing Pat Quinn for governor here in the bankrupt state of Illinois. Now, with a clear conscience, I truly believe that Bruce Rauner is without a doubt the correct choice for Illinois governor. Don from Orland Park I recently saw a sign that would be funny if not so ludicrously incorrect. It read, “Save the middle class, vote Democratic.” The gap between the wealthy and poor has grown throughout the Obama administration. According to Dems, the wealthy are anyone with more than $200,000 in income. That makes the middle class everyone between poverty … ]]> Fri, 24 Oct 2014 11:48:21 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Oct. 21, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

Isn’t it ironic that the sports commentators, e.g., 670 The Score, can critique what is wrong with the Bears game plan and determine what needs to be corrected, but the coaching staff responsible for the performance cannot. Terry in Mount Greenwood In addition to all of the good things happening as a result of the ACA, let’s not overlook that all of the major health insurance companies have posted on average a 32 percent profit for the past year. So much for the federal takeover of the health care industry. I just want to remind everyone that John Boehner promised, but has yet to come up with, a replacement for Obamacare. Why? He doesn’t have a better plan, that is why. Remember that the next time the House takes a vacation. Suppose you have an extra $10K to invest and you only have two people who could invest it for you. Pat Quinn or Bruce Rauner, which of the two would you trust with your money? Each new mobile device comes out and it’s thinner and thinner. My phone from four years ago wasn’t too thick. It would be nice if the new phone was the same thickness as my old phone but had a three-day battery life. Rick from Evergreen Park As far as skipping the direct route to the U.S. from Africa and going through another country (to sneak in), visas are checked where you have traveled in the past 30 days. If your travels originated in Africa, then the visa to the U.S.A will be denied. How is it everyone complains of the president overstepping his boundaries and stomping on the Constitution anytime he does something? And now the same people want him to stop all flights to the U.S. from Africa? Do they also know there’s other ways of getting to the U.S. than directly from Africa? In the U.S., 500,000 die each year from smoking, 600,000 die from heart disease, 170,000 die from cancer, 30,000 die from gun violence, 82 die each year from lightning strikes. All the right-wing corporate broadcast media, cable “news” especially, can talk about is Ebola. I see that the CEO of Facebook will donate $25 million for the Ebola crisis. How much is going to fat-cat executives, and how much for research and health care? I agree that the U.S. has to stop all incoming flights from these countries battling Ebola until the disease is under control. We are just making the problem worse and allowing it to spread all over the world. News agencies only give you a small fraction on the effects and seriousness of the Ebola virus. People really need to research this online. What I fear most is that this virus … ]]> Thu, 16 Oct 2014 02:17:24 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Oct. 15, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

How can “one-horse towns” like St. Louis, Detroit, New Orleans and Atlanta have nice indoor stadiums and we have the “Mistake on the Lake?” Ineptitude, it seems, is a market our civic powers have cornered. Regarding the comment on the data breach at Jimmy John’s and Dairy Queen: Many people use a debit/credit card instead of carrying cash. Rick from Evergreen Park, are you familiar with this sentiment? MJ from Worth To Rick of Evergreen Park: Debit cards get swiped as well. Some people prefer to have a card rather then cash on them. Regarding the data breach at Jimmy John’s and Dairy Queen: If you used a credit card, odds are you can’t afford that $7 sandwich or that $5 shake and shouldn’t have gone there in the first place. Rick from Evergreen Park California has had a drought for the past four years. This is having an effect on the produce prices in the whole country. So why are we in Illinois destroying some of the best farmland in the country with an airport and a new tollway? Do we even know if any of the airlines will use an airport in … ]]> Tue, 14 Oct 2014 02:14:17 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out for Oct. 13, 2014 ]]> Lead story image

To all those politicians who say the speed cameras are a good thing because they need to watch us to see if we’re breaking the law: Well, how about if we put cameras in your offices so the general public can watch you to see if you are breaking the law? Mike P. from Chicago On Oct. 13 we celebrate the life of the first modern Democrat, Christopher Columbus. When he left Spain, he didn’t know where he was going. Rev. Jesse Jackson: It is very unfortunate what happened to Thomas Eric Duncan. American health facilities have not been fully trained on Ebola. We are trying to have peace with all races. If what you speak is true, then how sad, but please make sure you have proof. Deepest sympathies to Mr. Duncan’s family and friends. I am really getting tired of these attack ads on TV with regard to the race for governor of Illinois. If Rauner wants to give some group money on the South Side, so what? It’s his money. But Quinn appears to be running all over the metropolitan Chicago area handing state money for this program or that program, and nobody is questioning him like they did Rauner. I’ll be glad when this election is over. Oak Lawn The Democrats have left a trail of destruction wherever they have gone. Our cities controlled by Democrats lack investment.
