★★★ “Daring” isn’t a word you’d use very much to describe 2011’s “The Hangover Part II,” the disappointingly lazy, beat-for-beat rehash of the wild and wildly successful original “Hangover” from 2009. Yet, here we are with “The Hangover Part III,” which runs a different sort of risk by going to darker and more dangerous places than its predecessors, both artistically and emotionally. The third film dares to alienate the very audience that made “The Hangover” the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time because, well, it isn’t exactly a comedy. Sure, there are some outrageous lines and sight gags, mostly courtesy … ]]> Thu, 23 May 2013 02:19:08 -0500 http://southtownstar.suntimes.com/photos/20267808-421/review-hangover-trilogy-ends-on-a-dark-note.html http://southtownstar.suntimes.com/photos/20267808-421/review-hangover-trilogy-ends-on-a-dark-note.html <![CDATA[ Pets o’ the Week for May 23, 2013 ]]>

Up concrete stairs, around giant flowerpots and through throngs of bustling commuters, Kathy Austin makes her way to work each morning. Though she is virtually blind, only able to distinguish contrasts of light and dark, she makes getting from her home in the leafy suburb of Homewood to her office on the 10th floor of a Loop high rise look easy, partly because she has Solomon to guide her, partly because she doesn’t let much stop her from pursuing her dreams. “Going blind is the only horrible thing that’s ever happened to me,” she says. “It’s just one of those … ]]> Wed, 22 May 2013 04:00:13 -0500 http://southtownstar.suntimes.com/photos/20178574-452/vickroy-guiding-knight-lab-gets-woman-where-she-needs-to-go.html http://southtownstar.suntimes.com/photos/20178574-452/vickroy-guiding-knight-lab-gets-woman-where-she-needs-to-go.html <![CDATA[ Fun time at Homewood Railroad Heritage Day ]]>

Three-year-old Alan Bertucci knew where the real action was Sunday in downtown Homewood. He enjoyed seeing model railroads running inside the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District Auditorium during the 10th annual Homewood Railroad Heritage Day. He saw the various artifacts for sale like memorabilia from old railroads and the hats and shirts bearing their logos, not to mention a wide range of items for model train buffs. He even got to ride on a faux train around a couple downtown streets. Alan had fun with all of the above, but he prefers the real deal. Safely nestled in the arms of his … ]]> Tue, 21 May 2013 13:17:29 -0500 http://southtownstar.suntimes.com/photos/20222723-418/fun-time-at-homewood-railroad-heritage-day.html http://southtownstar.suntimes.com/photos/20222723-418/fun-time-at-homewood-railroad-heritage-day.html
