Boys High School Sports Roundup for Jan. 15, 2012

Wrestling

Batavia Invitational: Lincoln-Way Central (213 points) topped Lemont (189.5) for first place in the 16-team field. Tyler Price (113 pounds), Joe Nelson (120) and Robbie Mikenis (132) won titles for Lincoln-Way Central. Lemont’s weight class winners were Jake Latanski (126), Jake Kaminsky (152), Eric Kirkman (170), Chris Giatras (182) and John Tomala (195).

Normal U-High Invitational: August Tholl (145), Alex Vargas (152) and Tyler Hill (220) claimed championships for Lincoln-Way North (144), which placed fifth out of 15 teams. Scottie Bonds (120) won his division for seventh-place Rich East (92.5).

Geneseo Invitational: Eddie Klimara won the title at 126 pounds in leading Providence (121.5) to a sixth-place finish in the 16-team event. Ronald Triche (106) and Vince Ambrose (220) added second-place showings for the Celtics. Kevin Moylan (145) captured top honors for Stagg (62), which came in 10th. Marian Catholic (55.5) placed 12th and also produced the 170-pound champion in Nate Jackson.

Lisle Invitational: Will Jones (120) and Jesse McLain (126) won titles for Evergreen Park (84.5), which placed sixth out of 12 teams.

Mahomet-Seymour Invitational: Cory Chojnowski was the heavyweight champion as Andrew (121) finished sixth in the 19-team event.

Reed-Custer Invitational: Bremen (112) was sixth and Tinley Park (91) eighth in the 16-team tournament.

Hinsdale South quadrangular: Mount Carmel defeated De La Salle 55-18, St. Patrick 57-20 and Wheeling 61-12.

Oak Forest quadrangular: Bradley went 3-0 to capture top honors against its three South Suburban foes. Shepard led the area contingent, defeating T.F. South 43-28 and Oak Forest 51-18. The Astros also fell to Bradley 38-22. In the remaining dual, T.F. South edged Oak Forest 39-36.

Boys Basketball

No. 1 Andrew 59, Illiana Christian 34: Mike Grenda had seven points and six rebounds for visiting Andrew (13-0). Tyler Hook added six points and six rebounds for the Thunderbolts.

No. 8 Homewood-Flossmoor 61, Rockford Boylan 53: Tyrone Sherman’s 21 points sparked visiting Homewood-Flossmoor (12-4).

Montini 62, Chicago Christian 47: Michael Kamp had 13 points for host Chicago Christian (6-12, 1-3) in the Suburban Christian Gold.

Bremen 74, Rauner 32: Cedric Clemons totaled 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for host Bremen (3-13).

Bass Pro Tournament of Champions

St. Rita 65, Springfield (Mo.) Glendale 60: Tony Hicks poured in 20 points for St. Rita (8-7) in the seventh-place game in Springfield, Mo.

Martin Luther King Classic

Dallas Lincoln 71, Richards 59: Raynard Judkins netted 19 points for Richards (9-7) in Miami.

Naperville North Shootout

Rich East 54, Kenwood 52: Don Henderson’s two free throws with four seconds left won it for Rich East (8-10). Ronald Lawton led the Rockets with 15 points.

Boys Bowling

South Suburban Blue Tournament: Tinley Park (6,230) won the seven-team meet behind medalist Jeff Nichols, who rolled a 1,342 series at Centennial Lanes. Kyle Sinwelski (1,328), of runner-up Oak Forest, (5,648) was second and T.F. North’s Charles Hutcherson (1,324) took third. T.F. South (5,562) was third in the team standings.

South Suburban Red Tournament: Individual champion Andrew Byland (1,448) guided Richards (6,369) to the championship at El-Mar Bowl. Oak Lawn (6,159) was second, while Eisenhower and Argo (5,827 each) tied for third in the six-team field. Oak Lawn’s Ryan Campin (1,418) was second overall and Argo’s Gerald Regep (1,337) came in third.

Boys Swimming

Riverside-Brookfield Invitational: Zach Rentner won the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 48.70 seconds) and 500 freestyle (4:57.96) in leading Andrew (255 points) to a third-place finish behind Riverside-Brookfield (281) and Oswego (258). The Thunderbolts also won the 400 free relay (3:23.13) behind Rentner, Kyle Fitzgerald, Michael Tamulonis and Rick Osty.

Sandburg Invitational: Sandburg (318) captured top honors in the 13-team meet. The Eagles won all three relays, including the 200 freestyle (1:27.67), where Matt Veldman, Michael O’Malley, Anthony Bonnar and Stan Grotkiewicz starred. Sandburg’s victory in the 400 free relay (3:14.66) consisted of contributions from Veldman, O’Malley, Stephen Zeiler and Grotkiewicz.
