Girls Basketball: Providence defeats Plainfield North

It took Providence a while to wake up in Monday’s McDonald’s Shootout contest at Willowbrook.
Once the Celtics did, though, it was lights out for Plainfield North.
Trailing by four late in the first period, Cassidy Glenn ignited a 25-point avalanche and an eventual 58-38 victory.
Glenn finished with 27 points, seven rebounds and five steals, and Sam Rohrer 11 points as Providence improved to 11-9.
Kaitlyn O’Boye led Plainfield North with nine points.
North, which came into the game with just three victories, kept the Celtics in frustration mode early, leading for most of the first period thanks to a 3-for-3 start from the field by O’Boye. After a short jumper by Carlie Corrigan, it was 17-13 Tigers.
“We were having a real hard time on defense,” Rohrer said. “We finally started playing together and figured out what their offense was.”
Glenn swished a three-pointer to get the Celtics to within one, then hit another trey just before the first-quarter buzzer to put them in front.
“For the past couple of days I’ve been practicing my threes because I’ve been kind of off,” Glenn said. “I just kind of wanted to develop it. So this game I came in ready to score.”
The second period saw Glenn add two more three-pointers and Alex Shermulis and Anna Novak one each. Rohrer added three buckets as the Celtics ran off a scoring streak that didn’t end until it was 38-17.
“That’s a lot of points in a row. Everything just started to click,” Rohrer said. “Sometimes we’re off in our shooting and we have to rebound a lot. But today we were on, I guess.”
North finally broke through with 34 seconds left in the half on a jumper by O’Boye. Providence would have no more significant runs, but the Tigers would never get to within striking distance.
