Football: Bremen’s David Smith makes Oklahoma his choice

Navigating through the chaotic, hectic world of college recruiting for several months, Bremen’s David Smith finally got a chance to relax Tuesday.
In front of friends and family at Bremen, Smith made a verbal commitment to play football at the University of Oklahoma in the fall.
“It was a long, tough road,” said a smiling Smith, who was wearing a white baseball hat with “OU” in red letters stitched on it. “With a lot of thought, I’ll be attending the University of Oklahoma. I just had a heck of a visit, met with (football) coach Bob Stoops, and I’m happy to be a Sooner.”
Smith fielded offers from more than 20 schools, the decision coming down to Oklahoma and West Virginia. The Sooners were a late entry to the process, only contacting Smith on Dec. 23. The running back visited the campus in Norman over the weekend and knew where he needed to go.
“It’s the opportunity of a lifetime,” Smith said. “I’m excited about this. I don’t even know what to say. I’m glad it’s over with, but it is a dream come true. I had a heck of a feeling at OU, and I’m ready to come in and compete.”
Because of injuries and transfers, the Oklahoma backfield is relatively thin, leaving the opportunity for Smith to compete for playing time right away.
“This is just the beginning for him,” Bremen coach Dan Stell said. “It’s a unique position because (Oklahoma) only has two scholarship running backs on their roster. He’s got a chance to be an impact player. This is an opportune position for him to be in, and I think he made the right choice.”
During his senior season at Bremen, Smith rushed 111 times for 595 yards and seven touchdowns. Bremen finished 6-4, making the state playoffs for the first time since 2006. In the Braves’ season-ending 17-7 loss to Hubbard in the Class 6A playoffs, Smith rushed 16 times for 62 yards and a touchdown.
