SouthtownStar Athletes On Campus: Basketball honor for St. Francis’ Karr

University of St. Francis forward Michelle Karr was chosen the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s Division I Player of the Week in women’s basketball for the period ending Dec. 26.

Karr (Providence) was an All-Tournament selection at the Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) LaQuinta Holiday Classic held Dec. 19 and 20. In the Fighting Saints’ 53-52 loss to Iowa Wesleyan on Dec. 19, Karr scored eight points and pulled down four rebounds.

In USF’s 72-50 loss to Mount Mercy on Dec. 20, the Tinley Park resident totaled 17 points, 10 rebounds and two steals. For Karr, it was her second double-double of the season.

Life of Brian

Lockport graduate Brian Bradley was named the CCAC Men’s Division I Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 19.

Playing for Robert Morris University, Bradley scored 31 points in the Eagles’ 99-92 overtime victory Dec. 17 at home over then-No. 1 Concordia (Calif.).

In overtime, the 6-foot-4 guard scored the first 10 points to put Robert Morris up 91-81, and also scored the first six of the Eagles’ nine points of the game.

Bradley added five rebounds, two assists and two blocks while shooting 50 percent from the floor. The junior made four three-pointers and was 5-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Take it on the run

Amanda Orzechowski (Bremen) was named the Most Valuable Runner on Blackburn College’s women’s cross country team for the 2011 season.

The senior’s season featured a 21st-place finish with a time of 24 minutes, 49 seconds at Blackburn’s Beaverthon 5k on Oct. 1 and a 39th-place showing with a time of 27:24 in the women’s 5k at the Principia College Invitational on Oct. 7.

In the classroom, the Midlothian native received another honor as she was one of 17 women’s cross country runners named to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s All-Academic Team for the fall of 2011. In all, there were 139 student-athletes who received the honor.

In order to attain the academic accolade, the recipients had to be varsity members of their school’s cross country, soccer or volleyball squad for the fall 2011 season.

Other selection criteria include a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade-point average, being at least a sophomore in academic standing and having at least one full year at their current institution.
