Boys Basketball: Hillcrest breaks away for win over Bremen

The weather outside might have been frightful, but Hillcrest brought enough third-quarter fire to keep everyone toasty in its 66-32 South Suburban Blue trouncing Friday night of host Bremen.
Up 25-14 at halftime, Hillcrest’s Jovan Moore (12 points) splashed in back-to-back three-pointers in the opening minute of the third period to ignite the rout. Hillcrest scored 28 points in the quarter and forced eight Bremen turnovers with its trapping 1-3-1 zone defense.
“(Moore) can fill it up. He was kind of forcing things in the first half, and we just told him to take his time,” Hillcrest coach Don Houston said. “When he comes off good screens and takes open shots, he knocks them down.”
It was a balanced offensive attack for Hillcrest (16-2, 8-0) as seven players scored three or more field goals. Desmond Trapp came off the bench to score 10 points, joining Moore as the only Hawks in double figures.
Bremen (3-14, 0-7) started the game with an efficient offense, taking a 10-9 lead into the second quarter, with all five of its opening baskets accompanied by an assist. Then the Hillcrest pressure forced the Braves out of their comfort zone. Bremen turned the ball over 20 times through the final three quarters.
“We came out sluggish in the first half,” Houston said. “We started to play our type of basketball in the third, playing with energy and getting in the passing lanes for deflections.”
Bremen was led by Devonta’ Wilson (10 points) and Cedric Clemons (9).
“We folded. We gave up a big run there in the third and we kind of cashed in,” Bremen coach Brian Flaherty said. “We didn’t play nearly as hard in that second half as we did in the first when we were going possession for possession.”
