Loyola University women’s basketball player Simone Law was named the Horizon League’s Co-Player of the Week for the period ending Jan. 16.

Law, who prepped at Marian Catholic, recorded two double-doubles, averaging 17.5 points and 10 rebounds per game, as the Ramblers posted wins at Youngstown State and Cleveland State.

Law, a 6-foot freshman forward, opened the week with a strong performance against Youngstown State, scoring 18 of her 21 points in the second half and adding 10 rebounds as the Ramblers built an 18-point lead before settling for an 82-77 win.

Against Cleveland State, the South Holland resident finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds to help Loyola jump out to a 28-point halftime lead in an eventual 85-67 win over the Vikings.

Through her league honor, Law was leading Loyola in both scoring (14.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.4 rpg) this season, and her five double-doubles represent the most by a Rambler freshman since Tonya Crum racked up five during the 1997-98 season.

Through Loyola’s first six Horizon League games, Law was averaging 16.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.

Going ‘Gonzo’

Illinois Wesleyan senior guard Eliud Gonzalez (Richards) was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 12.

The Oak Lawn resident scored nine points and recorded a career-high 11 assists, to go along with three rebounds, two steals and a block, during the Titans’ 84-63 win Dec. 10 at the University of Chicago. Gonzalez’s 11 assists tied a Ratner Center record and is tied for ninth all-time in Illinois Wesleyan history. The record is 14 shared by two players.

In tying the Ratner Center record for most assists by an opposing player, Gonzalez joined two others who have had 11 since the building opened in 2003.

It’s a lock

South Holland native Chris Lockhart was named Skyway Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 15.

Lockhart (Leo), a member of Prairie State College’s team, scored 31 points in the Pioneers’ 68-65 setback Jan. 10 to Waubonsee Community College. Lockhart is a 6-foot sophomore guard.

Lockhart also earned the Skyway Conference’s Player of the Week honor for the week ending Dec. 4.
