Nicole Zopf

School: Andrew

Sport: Bowling

Year: Junior

Zopf has been a key member of the Thunderbolts varsity since her freshman year, helping them to three straight SouthWest Suburban Red titles.

She led her team to state last year, when Andrew finished 14th.

“It was an amazing experience,” said Zopf, a bowler since age 6. “I can’t even explain it. We were such a young team, too, which made it even better.

“We do very well together as a team. (This year) we have a lot of potential.”

Steve Millar

Bryan Tellado

School: Shepard

Sport: Wrestling

Year: Senior

For Tellado, wrestling was a foreign subject when he started.

“I never wrestled before high school. My dad and coach (Scott) Richardson pushed me to wrestling after my freshman year of football,” Tellado said. “They thought it would be a good outlet for me.”

A linebacker on Shepard’s football team, Tellado earned his first tournament championship at the Stagg Invitational, winning the 170-pound division.

Logan Malloy

Sebastian Mysliwiec

School: Reavis

Sport: Swimming

Year: Senior

Having failed to qualify for the state meet through his first three years, Mysliwiec is thinking, “State or bust” this season.

“It’s definitely my goal,” he said. “I really want to go to state. That’s been my goal since freshman year.”

He hopes to qualify in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard butterfly. As a junior, Mysliwiec helped the Rams to the South Suburban Red title, winning the 200-yard individual medley and finishing second in the breaststroke.

Ryan Hernandez

School: Mount Carmel

Sport: Bowling

Year: Junior

Hernandez had a few nervous hours after sectionals as he had to wait to see if he would gain an at-large bid to state.

Hernandez was off by 16 pins, which proved good enough to earn his first trip to state.

“It was pretty crazy,” he said. “I kept checking the IHSA site a couple times an hour. I know I got lucky. I’d rather go with my team but it’s still pretty exciting.”

Hernandez struggled at state Friday, finishing 91st.
