Golf: Flossmoor’s Mayer in State Amateur final

Mayer in State Am final

Soon enough, Michelle Mayer will be off for her sophomore year at the University of Illinois, and Elizabeth Szokol will be heading to Northwestern as a freshman.

But first, Mayer, a Flossmoor resident, and Szokol, of Winnetka, will meet Friday in Homewood to decide the Illinois Women’s Golf Association Women’s State Amateur tournament at Ravisloe Country Club.

Mayer was taken to an extra hole by Frankfort’s Sylvie Brick before capturing their semifinal of the match play event, 1 Up. Szokol beat Swansea’s Kristi Tschudin 3 and 2.

In Thursday morning’s quarterfinals, Mayer beat Lauren English of Bloomington 6 and 4, Brick beat McHenry’s Char McLear 3 and 2, and Szokol topped Bloomington’s Kaitlyn Wampler 6 and 5.

Mayer’s younger sister, Rachel, will meet Posen’s Katelin Dorsey for the First Flight title. The Championship Flight finale tees off at 9:10 a.m.
