The sister act of Michelle and Rachel Mayer had a chance to sweep the championship and first flight finals Friday in the 79th Illinois Women’s Golf Association’s Illinois Women’s Amateur at Homewood’s Ravisloe Country Club.
Unfortunately for Mayer family legend, both Flossmoor residents came up a little short.
Michelle dropped the championship flight to Winnetka’s Elizabeth Szokal 4 and 3, while Rachel fell to Posen’s Katelin Dorsey 5 and 3.
Michelle, a member of the University of Illinois women’s golf team, made her run through the match play portion of the event after shooting a 74 in Tuesday’s stroke play qualifying tournament. She took down Frankfort’s Sylvie Brick to reach the finals.
She likely hasn’t seen the last of the victor. Szokal, a recent New Trier graduate, will be attending and playing at Northwestern in the fall.
Rachel fell just short of the championship flight, losing in a playoff during Tuesday’s stroke play. Still, the Loyola golfer enjoyed her run through the first flight.
“It worked out well, actually, because playing my way to the championship really helped build my confidence,” she said.
On her way to the finals, Rachel topped Kayla Stueland, a University of Illinois-Chicago golfer, and Rachel Oberhelde, who is considering joining the team at Loyola.
“They were both really fun to play with, especially being familiar with them,” she said.
As for the final, Dorsey dominated, and Mayer helped.
“She played really well, and I just wasn’t there,” she said. “But even though I fell short of winning the first flight, I still had a lot of fun and learned some things to work on. I feel like I gave a lot of strokes away out there.”
