Lincoln-Way East sprinter Aaliyah Brown was named Wednesday as the 2011-12 Gatorade Illinois Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
As a junior, Brown won the 200-meter state title in Class 3A last month. She also finished second in the 100, and anchored second-place finishers in the 400- and 1,600-meter relays.
A Gatorade press release noted the award “recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character.” Brown has a 3.32 GPA ad volunteers for local youth track programs and the Special Olympics.
“Aaliyah is not afraid to set her goals high, because she knows that she has what it takes to achieve them,” Lincoln-Way East coach Caroline Gerritsen said in the release. “She is very mature for her age and motivates her teammates more than I have ever seen anyone do.”
