It’s back to the drawing board for Lockport.
Downers Grove North ran over the Porters defense and scored on every possession but the final one in rolling to a 27-7 victory Friday night in Downers Grove.
It was the first time since 2002 that Lockport (0-1) lost its season opener.
“We learned some things,” Lockport coach Don McKillip said. “If we’re going to be a good team, we’re going to have to toughen ourselves up on both sides of the ball.”
The Trojans jumped out to a 7-0 first-quarter lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback David Edwards.
Kyle Leto (10 carries, 105 yards) scored on scampers of 56 and 15 yards and Gareth Jones added a 34-yard field goal to give Downers Grove North a 24-0 halftime lead.
Jones capped the first drive of the second half with a 26-yard field goal.
Lockport put together an 80-yard, 15-play drive and scored when Ryan Dalton found Brendan Reed for a 17-yard pass in the right corner of the end zone. That was the Porters’ only possession of the second half.
“I really thought that Ryan stepped up there and showed his competitive edge,” McKillip said of his junior quarterback. “He didn’t want us to get shut out. He scrambled around and sacrificed his body to get us the touchdown drive.”
Dalton was 3-for-5 for 34 yards on the drive.
Brenden Bays had six carries for 54 yards in the game for the Porters, who were outgained 316-130.
