Things did not go well for the Windy City ThunderBolts in the late innings of games Thursday night in Crestwood and Normal, and now the T-Bolts will need a minor miracle to reach the Frontier League playoffs.
After Florence scored in the ninth inning for a 1-0 win over Normal and Windy City dropped a 10-inning 4-2 decision to Lake Erie, the T-Bolts are two games behind Florence for the final wild card.
“We’ve just got to keep grinding,” Windy City’s C.J. Gillman said. “We want to extend this as long as we can.”
Windy City does have the tiebreaker over Florence by virtue of a season series win, but needs to sweep struggling River City (44-48) in the St. Louis suburbs and get a lot of help from Evansville, which plays Florence.
Evansville is 45-47, but has won seven of its last 10 games.
The T-Bolts also need Schaumburg, which is one game ahead of Windy City, to drop at least one game to Washington.
Windy City also has the tiebreaker over the Boomers.
The T-Bolts’ games vs. River City, as well as the Florence-Evansville series, are in jeopardy of being washed out as strong storms are expected in both areas all weekend.
