Trevon Smith is listed as a cornerback on the Crete-Monee roster.
He got his chance on offense Friday night and responded with three touchdowns as No. 5 Crete-Monee rolled over Moline 34-2.
“I’ve been working hard and just waited for my chance,” Smith said. “Our guys up front made it easy. They opened some big holes for me to run through.”
Smith got his chance at running back after starter DeShaun Smith had to leave with an injury.
“I only had a couple of reps this week,” Trevon Smith said. “I worked hard and paid attention to what the other running backs were doing.”
Smith scored on runs of 7 and 11 yards in helping Crete-Monee (3-0) take a 21-2 halftime lead. He added a 9-yard run with 6:30 left to play to close the scoring.
The Warriors defense also was tough. It allowed Moline just 48 yards rushing and no first downs in the first half. The Maroons threatened in the fourth quarter when they got to the Crete-Monee 5 but were stopped on downs.
“We were extremely disappointed with the way we played last week (at Marian Catholic),” Crete-Monee coach Jerry Verde said. “I thought we played wih more intensity in the first half, especially our defense. I thought our defensive ends, Chris Slayton and Travelle Smith, shut down their outside attack tonight.”
Crete-Monee’s other touchdowns came on a 15-yard pass from Marcus Terrell to Lance Lenoir and a 7-yard pass from Terrell to Kyle Tilley. Terrell finished 13-of-23 for 249 yards.
Lenoir also had three punt returns for 113 yards.
