Amber Clay, a senior outside hitter for Marian Catholic High School volleyball, is in her second full season on the Spartans varsity.

What did it feel like to be a state finalist in 2011?

It felt awesome! You know, not a lot of people get to have that experience. It was fun to play those teams.

Do you feel like you shocked the world?

Kind of. I feel that we shocked a lot of people, those who followed volleyball, because at our school volleyball isn’t all that big. People don’t really pay attention to us. To go that far was a huge deal.

What’s the best part about playing volleyball?

For me the best part is I love being out there having fun with my team. Everyone gets excited. That’s my favorite part, the energy.

What opposing player would you love to have as a teammate?

I’d probably love to have Mallory Salis (Marist). At club, we sometimes practice together and she just works so hard.

What will you remember the most about coach (Ryan) Summers?

Probably his football stories. Everything is a reference to his football days, and it’s just really funny.

Do you have any on-court rituals?

When I get out there I shake everyone’s hands, on both teams.

Who is your favorite celebrity?

Beyonce. She’s my favorite person in the whole world. She’s a good role model and I love her music.

Your dream celebrity prom date. Who is it?

I’d probably have to say Drake. I think he’s so cute.

Do you have any nicknames?

When I was a freshman someone on the team made pasta. The wind was blowing and Colleen (Rynne), her whole plate of pasta flew on me. Now they all call me Saucy.

As told to Tony Baranek
