After the first play of the game, it appeared Lincoln-Way Central may have left any memories of the devastating loss last week to Homewood-Flossmoor behind.
But after Kyle Wayteck’s 48-yard run, the Knights failed to score, and a familiar bad vibe returned in what became a 7-3 home loss to Sandburg in the SouthWest Suburban Blue. Sandburg improved to 4-0, 2-0 while Central fell to 1-3, 0-2.
“They’re all frustrating,” coach Brett Hefner said of the losses. “The defense played outstanding, and offensively, we didn’t finish things that needed to be finished. As head coach and play-caller, that’s on me.”
The Knights took the lead on their third possession, driving to the 10-yard line before ultimately settling for Kevin Mitchell’s 32-yard field goal with 1:32 remaining in the third quarter.
LeMonte Booker’s 65-yard touchdown run and Jonathan Milazzo’s extra point with 6:40 left in the third gave the Eagles the lead.
Jeremy Wilson replaced Cale Hayes at quarterback for the Knights with 3:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. He completed four passes, but a potential fourth-down conversion was dropped.
