Quarterback Tom Fuessel and a stout Lincoln-Way East defense led the way in the Griffins’ 36-7 win over visiting Lincoln-Way Central Friday in a SouthWest Suburban Blue match-up.

Fuessel ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as the No. 2 Griffins (7-0, 5-0) took an early lead over the Knights (3-4, 2-3) and never looked back.

The Griffins’ Nick Colangelo scored on a 24-yard run to make it 7-0 with 10:10 to play in the first period. Colangelo, a senior running back, set up the next East score by taking a screen pass from Fuessel 63 yards to the Central 1. Fuessel scored on the next play to make it 14-0.

East led 17-0 when Fuessel made three big plays on a five-play, 70-yard scoring drive to make it 24-0. Fuessel ran for 35 yards to the Knights’ 35. A holding penalty set East back to the 41. Fuessel then hit Josh Maholovich with a 36-yard pass to the Central 5 before running it in for a score on the next play.

Fuessel hit receiver Chris Pierie on a 7-yard scoring pass to make it 30-0 with 2:47 to play in the third quarter.

“It was a great game. We really came out on offense, and our defense came right out and we got a great win,” Fuessel said.

Fuessel rushed for 139 yards on 19 carries.

The Griffins defense intercepted Lincoln-Way Central quarterbacks three times and recovered one fumble. Knights running back Sean Studer rushed for 105 yards in the second half.
