No. 2 Lincoln-Way East continued its regular-season dominance with a 49-0 road victory over Joliet Central on Saturday afternoon.
The Griffins led 28-0 in the first nine minutes of the game, used three quarterbacks and had 15 different players carry the ball in the SouthWest Suburban Blue battle. Senior quarterback Tom Fuessel ran for a team-high 54 yards and a touchdown on four carries and was 4-of-5 for 54 yards passing with a touchdown to Austin Winkler before he was removed after four drives.
Running back Nick Colangelo ran for 31 yards and two scores. Justin Corbett and Brent Luchene added TD runs.
“It was fun to see the other guys get in because they bust their butts every day and they deserve to get their reps,” the NIU-bound Fuessel said. “We got a couple of plays from our backup running backs who really stepped up.”
East (8-0, 6-0) kept two streaks alive. The Griffins have won 25 straight regular-season games and 22 straight conference contests.
The Griffins also are trying to put the finishing touches on the fourth perfect regular season in the 12-year history of the program. They headed into the playoffs unbeaten in 2005, when they won the Class 8A title, 2006 and 2011. They close the season hosting Joliet West on Friday.
The Griffins also locked up the conference title with the win.
“We knew what we had to do this year and that’s to win our conference — it’s a tradition around here,” Fuessel said. “We want to keep that at home with Lincoln-Way East.”
On defense, Adam O’Grady and Cody Hoffman racked up sacks, Luke Lizen had an interception and Moe Almasri blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown.
Joliet (0-8, 0-6) was led by Sylvester Bellamy’s 15-carry, 75-yard performance.
