St. Rita and Fenwick, between them winners of the last 10 Kennedy Cup championships, will bring their fierce Catholic League hockey rivalry outdoors to Soldier Field in February.
On Feb. 9, the Mustangs and Friars will meet at the lakefront home of the Bears as part of the Feb. 1-18 OfficeMax Hockey City Classic Winter Festival.
“The kids are pretty excited about it,” St. Rita coach Craig Ferguson said. “It’ll be kind of cool. With the Winter Classic in the NHL on New Year’s Day the last few years, outdoor hockey has become more and more popular.”
The centerpiece of the Hockey City Classic is a Feb. 17 college doubleheader featuring Wisconsin vs. Minnesota and Notre Dame vs. Miami (Ohio). There also will be a slate of high school, youth and adult games, open skating and rink rental opportunities.
St. Rita vs. Fenwick will come at a time when both should be peaking.
“We’re not really even certain how we’re going to do this yet,” Ferguson said. “It’s the first weekend of the Catholic League playoffs, so my guess is we’ll play it as an exhibition game.”
St. Rita has won the last five Kennedy Cups, including four over Fenwick, which won the five prior.
The Mustangs have won two of the past three state titles, while the Friars won two during their string of five straight Catholic League titles.
