This week we shine the spotlight on: Maggie and Kelly Ruane, of Providence; Matt Anyiwo, of Homewood-Flossmoor; C.J. Zuraitis, of Lincoln-Way Central; and Kasey Nolan, of Evergreen Park.

Jr., Tennis, Providence
The Ruane twins ended their junior season with their second consecutive appearance at the state meet last weekend. The Joliet sectional doubles runner-up went 2-2, reaching the sixth round of the consolation bracket at the state meet, before being eliminated. “The girls had a solid year in doubles,” Providence coach Ben Thompson said. “They are hoping to build on their success this season for next season.”

Kasey Nolan
Sr., Swimming, Evergreen Park
Helping the Mustangs dominate their South Suburban Red dual meets, Nolan has embraced a bigger role during her senior year.
Having never competed in the 500-yard freestyle before this season, Nolan was not intimidated when coach Sarah Marshall approached her about swimming the event.
“As a team captain, Kasey has really stepped up,” Marshall said. “She has been a great leader. She always keeps the rest of the girls motivated.”

C.J. Zuraitis
Sr., Soccer, Lincoln-Way Central
Zuraitis primarily was a defender before last season, when Knights coach Sean Fahey decided to try him out at forward.
“One practice he put me at forward and I guess I did well so I started playing both,” Zuraitis said. “I think it’s fun to play both and get to try to score and try to stop people.”
Zuraitis scored 17 goals last season. This year, he’s become the Knights’ go-to attacker.

Matt Anyiwo
Jr., Cross Country, Homewood-Flossmoor
Anyiwo finished eighth in the competitive SouthWest Suburban Blue meet Oct. 13 where the Vikings finished sixth. He covered the Channahon Community Park course in 15 minutes, 36.8 seconds.
“Matt has been a true leader of the team and his desire to improve has become contagious among his fellow runners,’’ H-F coach Mary Kate Pack said.
Anyiwo ran on H-F’s 3,200-meter relay team that qualified for the Class 3A state track meet last spring.
