Jill Conrad kept ’em guessing.
Morgan Thomas kept ’em frustrated.
Stagg opened the 2012 playoff season a team determined to have all the angles covered, and played with the same determination Tuesday in a 25-17, 25-10 victory over Andrew in a Class 4A Shepard Regional semifinal.
Conrad had 14 assists and six kills, Lexi Mantas nine kills and Thomas 13 digs and 11 service points as the Chargers (30-6) advanced into Thursday’s regional final.
“Everything is really coming together,” Thomas said. “All the sets are there, all the digs are up. Everyone is diving for every ball.
“We’re very confident in the back row. Megan Hearne, I always know that she’s behind me. It’s the same with Ali (Conrad). It’s really nice.”
But not very inviting for Andrew (10-24), which had just 10 kills for the match, seven by Tara Adams. The Thunderbolts had only one run of more than two points, scoring four in a row late in Set 1 after Stagg was comfortably ahead 23-11.
Stagg, meanwhile, attacked early and often, running to leads of 8-2 in Set 1, 6-0 in Set 2 and never looking back. Jill Conrad, in particular, offered a vexing mix of tips and blasts. And when she wasn’t putting the ball down herself, she was sending assists cross court to Mantas.
“I just go up and use whatever is going to work,” Conrad said, smiling. “A kill is a kill and ... tips are more frustrating sometimes than a hard hit is. Then they move up on me, and then I swing.”
Marian Catholic 25-25, Shepard 21-21: Marian Catholic (28-8) had to rally from deficits of 17-12 in Set 1 and 13-11 in Set 2. Amber Clay (12 kills, 4 blocks, 3 aces), Colleen Rynne (10 digs, 20 assists), Taylor Byas (9 digs) and Kendyl Todd (4 kills, 5 blocks) led the winners. Natalie Carberry had six kills, Stephanie Korbakes five kills, Chrystal McAlpin four blocks, Caroline Graham 14 assists and Franchesca Graffeo 15 digs for Shepard (21-11).
