Boys Cross Country
Class 3A Normal Community Sectional: Runner-up Lincoln-Way Central (81) qualified for the state meet behind Chris Kaminski (15:31) and Dru Rozewicki (15:36), who were seventh and ninth, respectively, on the 3-mile course at Normal’s Maxwell Park. Thornwood put three runners in the state finals in Khalil Lightbourne (15:57), Kenneth Allen (15:58) and Jesse Unzueta (15:59). Homewood-Flossmoor’s Matt Anyiwo (15:39) and Lincoln-Way East’s Luke Johnston (15:59) also will compete on the state level.
Class 2A Peoria Notre Dame Sectional: Lincoln-Way West’s Ryan Kennedy (15:53) advanced to the state meet after finishing 17th in the 2.95-mile race at Illinois Central College in East Peoria.
Class 2A Wheaton Academy Sectional: Illiana Christian (52) qualified for the state finals after placing third behind Yorkville (36) and Glenbard South (52). The Vikings were led by Tony Wondaal (15:10), who finished third in the 3-mile contest at Reed-Keppler Park in West Chicago. Four area athletes earned state berths on an individual basis, the group consisting of Marian Catholic’s Camren Howard (16:13), Evergreen Park’s Matt Przeslicke (16:22), Bremen’s Jacob Windstrom (16:23) and Lemont’s Aaron Oldanie (16:24).
Class 1A Lisle Sectional: Beecher’s Grant Nykaza (15:49) was the medalist in the 3.1-mile race at Lisle Community Park. As a team, the Bobcats (194) were seventh in the meet won by Richmond-Burton (33).
Girls Cross Country
Class 3A Normal Community Sectional: Samantha Ostmann (18:17) was eighth in the 3-mile contest in leading Lincoln-Way East (123) to a fourth-place finish and a spot in the state meet. Kaley McLawhorn (18:36) added an 11th-place showing for the Griffins at Maxwell Park. Fifth-place Lincoln-Way Central (133) also qualified for the state championships as Elizabeth Venezio (18:58) led the team with an 18th-place finish. Lincoln-Way North’s Abby Casey (19:17) will compete at state on an individual basis.
Class 2A Peoria Notre Dame Sectional: Lincoln-Way West’s Natalie Waters (17:39) was the top individual qualifier for the state meet by placing second in the 2.94-mile race at Illinois Central College.
Class 2A Wheaton Academy Sectional: Illiana Christian (103) captured a state berth by coming in fourth at Reed-Keppler Park. The Vikings’ top runner was Alexa Beezhold (18:12), who finished fifth over three miles at Reed-Keppler Park. Lemont produced a pair of individual state qualifiers in Victoria Salazar (19:01) and Claire Gagan (19:11).
Class 1A Lisle Sectional: Beecher (165) captured the final opening in the state meet by finishing fifth at Lisle Community Park. Jade Dooley (21:24) was the top individual for the Bobcats, finishing 17th in the 3.1-mile race.
Class 2A Lincoln-Way West Sectional
Washington 4, St. Laurence 1: Alejandro Unzueta scored for St. Laurence (15-8-1) in the championship.
SouthWest Suburban Red Meet: Host Lincoln-Way North (305) secured first place behind Cheyenne DeGraff, who set a school record in winning the 100-yard backstroke (59.21 seconds). DeGraff also won the 500 freestyle (5 minutes, 11.31 seconds) in addition to helping the Griffins take first in the 200 medley relay (1:52.49) and 400 free relay (3:44.31). Lincoln-Way West’s Emily Gallagher was the meet’s other individual standout, posting wins in the 50 free (24.78) and 100 free (54.11). Stagg (255), which won the 200 free relay (1:41.38), was second in the team standings, followed by Andrew (233), Lincoln-Way West (184) and Bradley (182).
