Carly Krull knows every state meet is a new experience, especially if it’s in a different sport.

Krull, a swimmer her freshman and sophomore years at Sandburg, will compete for the first time in the Class 3A state cross country meet Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

“I can’t wait to see what it’s like,’’ she said. “I’ve been to state for swimming, but I’m sure cross country is a different experience. That will be so fun.’’

It could be a lot of fun for Krull, who also runs track at Sandburg. She won the Marist Sectional at Midlothian Meadows in 17 minutes, 5.3 seconds, 22 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Without a challenger near the end of the course to potentially lower her time, Krull still clocked the fifth-fastest Class 3A sectional effort in the state. That doesn’t mean she’ll be among the top five Saturday, but her chances for success look promising.

“Just to run the best race I can,’’ Krull said when asked about her goal for the meet. Her previous best time is 16:59.

Glenbard West’s Madeline Perez (16:38.58) has the top 3A time and will be tough to beat considering she went unchallenged at the Niles West Sectional. Lake Park’s Kaylee Flanagan and New Trier’s Courtney Ackerman, third and fourth, respectively, last year in the state, finished fifth and fourth, respectively, at Niles West.

Sandburg took second at the Marist Sectional to qualify as a team behind meet champion Downers Grove South. Krull, Grace Foley (fifth), Maggie Sobolewski (24th), Jacquelyn Schirmacher (30th) and Annie Lebert (40th) were the scorers for the Eagles.

Marist fell two places short of getting downstate as a team for the first time, but the RedHawks’ Maggie O’Loughlin, already an All-Stater from last year’s 22nd-place finish, is going back after taking fourth in the sectional.

“I’m hoping to do that again this year,’’ O’Loughlin said of making All-State. Teammate Moira McDermott also earned a return trip to Detweiller.

Shepard’s Lauren Loomis, a three-time South Suburban Red champion, qualified as an individual for the first time by taking eighth at the Marist Sectional.

In Class 2A, Illiana Christian qualified as a team led by Alexa Beezhold’s fifth-place finish at the Wheaton Academy Sectional.
