Sandburg’s Carly Krull and Grace Foley, both running in the Class 3A state cross country meet for the first time, earned All-State status Saturday by placing in the top 25 at Detweiller Park in Peoria.
Krull, a junior who collapsed from dehydration at the finish line, placed 15th in 16 minutes, 58 seconds in the final race of her first season on the team.
Foley, a promising freshman, was 17th in 17:01 as the Eagles finished 13th at the 25-team meet won by Naperville North.
“That’s exciting, for sure, but I wish I would have done better,’’ said Krull, starting to choke up as she described what happened. “They said I was dehydrated.’’
Teammates Maggie Sobolewski and Victoria Hatch and a race official were holding Krull up in the chute after the race.
“She ran a good race and she fought hard,’’ Sandburg assistant coach Kara Ciccarelli said. “The competition at state is getting faster and faster. She put everything out there that she had. She still ran a great race.’’
The other scorers for Sandburg were Jacquelyn Schirmacher (118th, 18:22), Sobolewski (121st, 18:22) and Renee Letz (133rd, 18:28).
“The older girls I feel helped push me, my older teammates,’’ Foley said. “At the beginning I was a little nervous I was going to get boxed in on one turn. But from then on I just tried moving up.’’
In Class 2A, Alexa Beezhold made All-State by finishing 15th in 17:41 to lead Illiana Christian to 10th place.
“I think I had a really good beginning,’’ said Beezhold, who was 37th last year as a sophomore. “Once I got up to the front I tried to hold it. The last stretch is really hard for me.’’
Also scoring for Illiana Christian were Lauren Brink (66th, 18:34), Kristen Brink (72nd, 18:37), Emma Pawlowski (88th, 18:45) and Alex Clausing (134th, 19:25).
“Very, very happy, six of the seven girls really smashed their pr’s (personal records),’’ Illiana Christian coach Deb Top said.
The final two runners for Illiana Christian were Brittany Groen (150th) and Monica Smits (191st).
