The 2011 state meet was ugly, last week’s sectionals sloppy.
Yet, Sandburg coach Jane Caliendo is approaching this weekend’s state championships at Evanston High School with a positive outlook.
“Our goal is to score, and we believe we can do that,” Caliendo said. “We thought our best possible swims to do that (scoring) were the three relays. We’ve still got something left to give.”
Scoring was a goal unmet in 2011, when the Eagles advanced six individual swimmers and three relays. None earned the top-12 preliminary finish necessary to advance to Saturday’s swim, thus Sandburg wasn’t among the 41 teams to appear in the team standings.
With a contingent one fewer swimmer this time around — the Eagles have five individual event swimmers and three relays in Friday’s prelims — Caliendo seems to feel better about Sandburg’s chances to land spots in Saturday’s championship and consolation heats.
The team’s strength is in its three relay teams. The 400-yard freestyle relay had the eighth best sectional time in the state with the 200 free (10th) and 200 medley (14th) not far behind.
An added bonus? The relay performances at sectional weren’t particularly good, according to Caliendo.
“We had extremely slow exchanges — just really, really slow — and still advanced,” Caliendo said. “We punched our ticket, and that was the goal. I think we can clean up the exchanges and get some time there. We didn’t come all the way down (tapering), and we’ve still got some time to give.”
Having set five different records at the sectional, Sandburg’s Brittany Kamper is ready for her shot at going out on top.
“I’m really excited to see where we place, and hopefully make it back to that second day and place top 12,” Kamper said. “I love everyone on the team. We’re best friends, so when you do it as a group, like with the relays, it’s a win as a team.”
Sandburg’s Caitlin Krull had the eighth-best sectional finish in the state in the 200 free and 12th-best in the 500 free.
Among other Southland swimmers in the mix for a finals berth is Lincoln-Way North senior Cheyenne De Graff. Last season, De Graff finished seventh in the 200 individual medley and 12th in the 100 breaststroke.
Her sectional time in the individual medley was the fourth-best in the state, while her breaststroke time was seventh-best.
A three-time state qualifier, Mother McAuley diver Meghan Dragel will look to improve on her 27th-place finish last season as a junior. Dragel finished second at the Downers Grove North Sectional but comes into this weekend’s meet with the fifth-best score in the state.
Tinley Park’s Hannah Schultz is seeded in the top 12 in the 50 free (7th) and 100 butterfly (9th).
