In advancing out of the sectional, Lockport’s Amanda Moran was dog-tired as she qualified for the state meet in the 100-yard backstroke.
The junior had saved her taper training for state, hoping to see a significant time drop.
The strategy paid off as Moran finished the 100-yard backstroke in seventh place in Friday’s state prelims, covering the distance in 56.87 seconds.
“I felt so much better swimming (Friday) than last week,” Moran said. “Last week, I felt dead the first 25 yards, but (Friday) I didn’t feel it until the last 15 yards.”
Moran will swim in Saturday’s consolation heat in the meet at Evanston High School. Last season, she finished fifth in the state in the event. Her time Friday was almost a full second faster than a year ago. Friday’s finish would have earned her a third-place medal last season.
“I’m not disappointed at all advancing to the consolation (and not the championship),” she said. “It’s definitely encouraging to know I’m part of all this time dropping. It’s crazy at the state meet how much the time is dropping.”
With 10 heats in the backstroke, Moran swam in the third heat and watched her time hold up.
“Amanda’s confidence was there, and she was able to get out in the lead and was able to build on it (in her heat),” Lockport coach Grant Ferkaluk said.
Mother McAuley diver Meghan Dragel finished eighth, piling up 283.70 points.
Andrew freshman Caily Friel finished 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.01), dropping .67 seconds from her sectional time.
Sandburg’s 400 freestyle relay team of Brittany Kamper, Kim Katner, Caitlin Krull and Clare Lawlor was the last qualifier in the event, finishing 12th (3:32.36).
