Windy City ThunderBolts manager Morgan Burkhart has resigned after one season with the team.
After leading the T-Bolts to a 54-42 record in the Frontier League this summer, Burkhart signed a contract extension to return for the 2013 season. Instead, he’s agreed to become the hitting coach for the Class-A Fort Wayne TinCaps, a San Diego Padres affiliate.
Burtkhart began his coaching career as a hitting coach with the independent Calgary Vipers before becoming their manager from 2009-11.
Burkhart is considered a Frontier League legend. He holds the league’s single-season home run record with 36 in 1998 and the league’s Most Valuable Player award is named after him.
After replacing Mike Kashirsky as manager, Burkhart improved on the T-Bolts’ 48-48 record in 2011, but fell short of the playoffs.
He joins several other former T-Bolts coaches and managers in affiliated ball, including 2007 pitching coach Brendan Sagara, 2007 manager Andy Haines and 2009 manager Tommy Thompson.
