Lincoln-Way East quarterback Tom Fuessel, who had verbally committed to Northern Illinois University during the summer, has reopened his college recruiting.
According to Griffins coach Rob Zvonar, the Fuessel family made this decision based primarily on the “uncertainty regarding the coaching longevity of coach (Dave) Doeren and his staff at NIU. This is solely based on the amazing job they have done and the tremendous success they have achieved. Coach Doeren gave Tom an opportunity to play Division I football before anyone else, and Tom is still considering Northern.
“But the possible interest from BCS-level schools based on Tom’s performance this season is something Tom wants to look at. There are no specific schools at this time.”
After a season-opening loss to Iowa, the Huskies, led by Mount Carmel graduate Jordan Lynch at quarterback, have won 11 in a row. However, their success could come at a price. Doeren and his staff are expected to be a hot commodity and could leave for a more prominent college program.
A new coach and new system might not fit the strengths of Fuessel, a blazing runner who is regarded more as an athlete than a pure quarterback at the next level.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound senior rushed for 1,502 yards and 21 touchdowns, and passed for 1,141 yards and eight scores for East, which finished second to Glenbard West in Class 7A.
