Shepard’s leading scorer at 15 points per game, junior guard Jacob Littleton’s first-half effort Friday wasn’t up to par with just two points.
For that matter, the whole team’s effort wasn’t up to par as the Astros held a 20-19 halftime lead at Bremen.
Littleton wasted little time setting things right in the third quarter, scoring seven points in just 32 seconds as Shepard pulled away for good in a 57-40 win in a South Suburban crossover.
“It was just that our team started to work hard and we all have faith in each other,” Littleton said. “We kept going at it and the baskets came one after another.”
Londell Lee (15 points, 4 steals, 3 blocks) and Littleton (12 points) led Shepard (5-3, 2-2). Jimmy McClinton added nine points.
At the 5:37 mark in the third, Littleton drove hard and was fouled, converting the basket. He corralled the miss of his free throw and scored under the basket.
The next time down the court, he drilled a three-pointer from the wing to put the Astros up 27-19.
“The first half was kind of sluggish so we knew we had to get back into it,” Littleton said. “We tried to turn it up.”
Littleton had 10 points in the third quarter, while Lee added five, including a vicious one-handed dunk. Shepard went up by as many as 22 points in the fourth at 44-23.
Bremen (5-4, 1-3) had a run in the fourth, courtesy of 12 points from Otis Lane, but could get no closer than 13 points.
“Our Achilles’ heel has been scoring points,” Bremen coach Brian Flaherty said. “They had that run and punched us in the mouth, and for the first time this season I didn’t see our ability to weather the storm.”
Marcus Geralds added 11 points and eight rebounds for Bremen.
