Morgan Park guard Billy Garrett Jr. wasn’t having his best start to a game. The normally efficient three-point shooter missed his first three three-point attempts Wednesday against Brooks.
As a confident shooter does, though, Garret kept on shooting. His fourth three-point attempt came as the first-quarter buzzer sounded, and the ball found nothing but net. And Garrett was fouled to boot.
Garrett completed the four-point play, giving his team a spark in what ended up a 93-45 blowout for the top-ranked Mustangs in the Public League Red-South.
“We started slow as a team,” said Garrett, who finished with 13 points in three quarters of play. “I think that four-pointer really gave us a boost. We played well the rest of the way.”
Kyle Davis had 19 points, Markee Williams added 14, and Kain Harris and Xavier Davis each had 11 for the Mustangs (16-1, 4-0), who are gearing up for a showdown Wednesday vs. Simeon. Taylor added nine rebounds, Davis had six assists and Williams had five steals.
Khalee Muse had 11 points to lead the Eagles (8-8, 0-5).
The Mustangs trailed 12-7 late in the first but went on a 29-7 run to lead 36-19 at halftime. They turned it into a laugher in the third quarter when they outscored the Eagles 33-12 for a 69-31 lead.
The size and quickness of the Mustangs proved no match for the Eagles, who continually turned the ball over but continued to play hard the entire contest.
“We wanted to get our legs up from under us, and that’s why we pressured the whole game,” Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin said. “We look at Simeon like a normal game — we don’t get too high or too low.”
