Boys Basketball: Eisenhower falls to Tilden

Updated: February 22, 2013 6:11AM

Back from a six-game suspension, Eisenhower senior Tyrone Terrell popped in 28 points Sunday.

The Cardinals, however, couldn’t get over the hump and dropped a heartbreaking 71-69 decision to Tilden in the MLK Dream Classic Shootout at Young High School in Chicago.

Terrell, a four-year member of the varsity, returned from a six-game team suspension after a school suspension. He was leading the SouthtownStar area in scoring, averaging 27 points per game, before the suspension in December.

School officials would not offer specifics about the suspension. Coach Mike Curta said “He took care of what he needed to take care of within our school so he is 100 percent back and ready to go.’’

In the final 12 seconds Sunday, Terrell missed a layup and three-point attempt and the Cardinals fell to 3-11.

Eisenhower trailed by 13 points in the third quarter and 69-63 with 2:36 remaining. Terrell then came up with two steals and hit two three-pointers to knot the game at 69 with 1:15 left.

Senior Allen Potts, who finished with 29 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocked shots, responded with an 8-footer with 22 seconds left for Tilden (7-10).

Calviontae Washington and Jonathon Wilson added 10 points each for Eisenhower.

The Cardinals were missing B.J. Bronaugh (ankle injury) and Vinny Curta (concussion). Eisenhower also lost 6-foot-8 Devon Brown, who moved to Texas earlier this month.

“I’ve had experiences this year that I’ve never experience before,” Curta said. “Hopefully, this makes me a better man if not a better coach. Any time you deal with young kids, you have to remember you are a teacher, but we’re not going to wallow in self pity and whine and cry. We have about 10 games left and you always have hope.”

Bronx (N.Y.) St. Raymond 56, No. 4 St. Rita 52: Tory Ferguson’s 15 points propelled host St. Raymond (11-5). St. Rita fell to 12-5 in coach Gary DeCesare’s return to the school where he won two state federation championships in 16 years at the helm.
